SCHAFER, Florence T. passed away May 7, 2014, in Newfane Healthcare and Rehab Center.

Born in Somerset on March 17, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Emma Arnold Mead. Florence was a Matron for the Niagara County Sheriffs Department for 25 years, retiring in 1994.

Florence was the mother of Charles (Jackie Ward) Schafer of Lockport, Craig (Mary) Schafer of Tonawanda and Rick (Jill) Schafer of Lockport; grandmother of SIX; and great-grandmother of 11. She was the sister of Charles Mead, Dorothy Chaffee and Charlotte Kuzma. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in Wrights Corners Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Alzheimers Association of WNY, 2805 Wehrle Dr., Suite 6, Williamsville, NY 14221-7380 would be appreciated.

CROWFIELD, Willie passed away May 4, 2014 under the care of Niagara Hospice.

Born in Tuskegee-Milstead, Ala. on Aug. 12, 1938, he was the son of Willie Dean and Ludie Pearl (Williams) Crowfield.

Willie served in the US Army from 1956 to 1959 in Germany with Elvis Presley.

He worked for Harrison Radiator where he was a welder retiring in 1990 after 25 years. Willie enjoyed playing chess, cards, fishing and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Estep) Crowfield of Niagara Falls; father of Tara (Christopher) Clayton of Lockport; step-father of Kimberly and Vincent Watts both of Niagara Falls; grandfather of Branun, Brynell Middleton, Jaheim Clayton, Brianna Knudson and Shalayna Knudhur; brother of Johnny Riley of Alabama and Sharon Bienaime of Winterhaven, Fla.; also a host of nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in North Ridge Cemetery.

JAKUBOWSKI, Nancy A., 65, of Cheektowaga, passed away May 9 at Hospice Buffalo, after a long battle with cancer; A Loving mother, she is survived by her children David (Sandy) Jakubowski, Ann Marie Pieszala, and Michael (Phoebe) Jakubowski. 

Devoted grandmother of Matthew, April, Megan (Mike), Emily, Ethan and Mason.

The dearest sister of Marlene (Kenneth) Gabriel and James (Rose) Byczynski.

Nancy was also survived by her Aunt Theresa Jendrasik and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

NOWICKI, Mildred, 83, suddenly passed away on May 7; a retiree of Rich Products in Buffalo. Passed away at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, in Tonawanda, early Wednesday Morning. 

Mildred was the beloved wife of the late Edward L. Nowicki and devoted daughter of the late Mahlon James Ayers and the late Nathanielle "Aimee Nellie" (nee Clere) Ayers.

She was the dearest sister of Nanatte (late Gil) Kepner, Edith (late John) Derasmo, the late James Ayers, the late Lee (Stan) Witzak and also survived by many nieces and nephews.

JAYNES, Marie C. passed away May 4, 2014 in the Odd Fellow Rebekah Health Care Facility, under the care of Niagara Hospice.

Marie was born Aug. 30, 1921 in Lockport, the daughter of the late William and Sophie (Krull) Conley. Marie worked for several years at the Retailer.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid of the church, lifetime member of the P.T.A., enjoyed playing cards and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Marie was predeceased by her husband, Walter C. Jaynes on June 13, 2001; and son, Walter C. Jaynes, III on July 16, 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Richard) Lemley of Lockport; grandsons, Andrew (Meghan) Beakman of Syracuse and Matthew (Katherine) Beakman of Buffalo; and great-grandson, Jackson Beakman.

Interment will be in Wrights Corners Cemetery. Memorials to the charity of ones choice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences at

She was born in Lockport to the late Frank and Esther (Schieble) Albee.

A daughter, Dena Lopez of Lockport survives Dawn. She is also survived by grandsons, Eric Windnagle and Joshua Lopez; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

BURHANS, Barbara C. (Sugarman) of Lockport died on May 5, 2014 at her home.

Born Dec. 29, 1933 in Buffalo, she was the daughter of Martin and Emma Sugarman.

Barbara was a graduate of Lafayette High School and Bryant & Stratton College.

She was the office manager of The Harry H. Moore Corporation for nearly 40 years.

Barbara actively supported her husband Bills efforts in the founding of several organizations including Tuscarora Yacht Club, Niagara Packard Club and Burhans in America since 1660. They were members of Royal Canadian Yacht Club and The Ale and Quail Club.

Over the years, she enjoyed many activities that included sailing and cruising on Lake Ontario, Book Club and Home Bureau meetings, league bowling, antique car shows and playing backgammon. She also contributed to the restoration of the interiors of their antique Packard collection.

Her husband, William E. Bill Burhans predeceased Barbara.

She is survived by three sons, Mark (Debra) of Elba, Keith (Susanne) of Irondequoit and Bryan (Karen) of Tonawanda; and two daughters, Lynn and Daryl of Lockport; her brother, Louis (Nancy) Sugarman of Auburn Corners, Ohio; and her sister, Daryl (John) Martin of Edenton, N.C. Her seven grandchildren, Karen, Gretchen, Lauren, Kristen, Allison, Sarah and William, also survive her.

AIELLO, Joseph, 94, of North Tonawanda, died Sunday, April 27, 2014. Aiello was born in Palermo, Sicily, May 22, 1919 to Salvatore and Maria (Ingrassia) Aiello. Joseph came to the United States at the age of 18 months, he attended Canisus College and University of Buffalo. He was a Golden Glove Champion for three straight years in 1937, 38, and 39; Welter Weight; retired from Bell Aircraft after 43 years of services. He was the President of the union UAW 501, UAW, AFL 1286 for 40 years. He was also the security guard for President Kennedy when he visited Bell. He was the president of Bell Aircraft Bowling League, a Auxiliary Policeman for 30 years for Buffalo and North Tonawanda, and worked as a Designing Engineer. In his spare time he was an avid smelt catcher and hunter. Joseph was predeceased by his wife, Angela (Caputy) Aiello, daughter, Maria Mayes, grandson Marchello Aiello, sister, Rose (Sam) Merlo, brother , Frank (Mary) Aiello.

Aiello is survived by his children Joseph S. (Karen) Aiello, Rosann (Richard) Schweickhard, Lawrence J., Michealina (Richard) Desimone, Grandfather of 8, great grandfather of 10, also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

SCHAFFERT, John Jack L. passed away peacefully on April 11, 2014 at Briodys Health Care Facility.

Born April 23, 1915 in Lockport, he was the son of the late Frank and Helen Schaffert. John married Frances Leininger on June 20, 1953. They were married 58 years before Frances predeceased him on Oct. 20, 2011. John served in the U.S. Army 1942 to 1945 in World War II. John fought in Battle of the Bulge in Germany. He worked at Harrison Radiator where he met his wife Frances.

John and Frances owned and operated Grays Grill from 1950 to 1972 on Main Street in Lockport. They then owned and operated Schafferts until their retirement in 1981.

John was a life member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. and Lockport BPO Elks No. 41. John was happy in life and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and attending their events. One of his favorite things to do was watching Notre Dame and Buffalo Bills Football. He and Frances spent many days together taking long rides in their convertible. John was a lifelong member of S1. Marys Church.

John is survived by his children, Arlene (Stephen) Wallace and Michael (Mary) Schaffert, all of Lockport. Grandchildren Krystal Bowden of New York City, Mark Wallace, Lockport, Ashley (Chuck) Schaffert, of Boston, Mass. and Taylor Schaffert of Lockport. Also, survived by sister, Margaret Nan (late Charles) Shaw.

Predeceased by sisters, Helen Honey Doyle, Blanche McArthur, and Kathryn Sis Adams and brothers Joseph and Frank Bud Schaffert.

Interment will be in Cold Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Niagara Hospice House, or American Cancer Society.

CARRERO, Luis A. (Louie) passed suddenly on April 7, 2014.

He was born in Lockport on Feb. 17, 1958 to the late Ismael Carrero and Mary (Dunn) Carrero. Luis attended Starpoint School and worked as a mechanic at Fibercell in Lockport.

His interest in cars and motorcycles especially Harleys started at a very young age because of all the time he spent around his grandfathers business (Dunns Auto Wrecking). Louie had a big heart and enjoyed helping people.

Besides his mother; two children, Russell Carrero of Buffalo and Trina Carrero of Lockport survive him; two brothers, Steven (Sharon) Carrero of Florida and Kevin (Lori) Carrero of Lockport. Louie is also survived by a granddaughter, Juliana Carrero; and many nieces and nephews.

JORDAN, Carol L. passed away March 30, 2014 in St. Anthonys Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Born in North Tonawanda on Nov. 3, 1931 she was the daughter of John R. and Ethel (Peters) Long.

Carol is survived by her husband, William B. Jordan; mother of Patricia Jo (Kenneth) Haak, Mary Ann (Craig) Kubiniec, and Thomas W. (Judy) Jordan; grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of 16.

BROOKS, Karen Mae passed away March 15, 2014 in Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport.

Born in Lockport on Nov. 17, 1960, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Joyce Spring Patterson. Karen was a graduate of Starpoint High School and was a Certified Nursing Assistant.

She is survived by her longtime companion, Richard Cyrus.

Karen was the mother of SR Brooks, Shannon (Chris) Brooks and Robert Brooks; grandmother of Skysha, Volandra and Riley; sister of Deborah (John) Kinzly, Patricia (John) Preston and Jacquie (Daniel) Schichtel; step sister of Michael (Susan) Wohleben, David (Mary) Wohleben and Jerry Wohleben.; also survived by several nieces, nephews; and her dog, Chiefy.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Pauls United Lutheran Church of Christ, 3921 Mapleton Road.

HAAS, Michael E., 58, passed away March 29, 2014.

He was born Aug. 20, 1955 in East Aurora to Eugene and Mary (Bolland) Haas.

Beloved husband of Janet Ann Haas; dear brother of Amy Haas of Cheektowaga and Pamela Ramsey of North Carolina. Michael is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Moose Club and Sons of American Legion. Michael enjoyed playing darts and pool. He especially loved bowling and swimming. Michael enjoyed being around people and will be remembered for his love of life.

POODRY, Steven R. of Basom passed away March 30, 2014 in the Cleveland Clinic.

Steve was born May 24, 1956 a son of the late Randall and Alma (Doxtader) Poodry. He was a Cayuga and member of the Heron Clan. Steve was involved in many organizations and functions during his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Halburd) Poodry. CALDERONE, Elaine T. passed away suddenly April 4, 2014.

Born July 18, 1951 in Niagara Falls, she was the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Pillot) Waselus. Elaine attended Niagara County Community College and owned Elaines Formals and Bridals in Lockport retiring in 2005. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, shopping and helping others.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Otto Calderone of Lockport; her two daughters, Alicia and Heather Calderone both of Lockport; four grandchildren, Shaylynn Ford, Jason Richardson, Gianna Campisano and Joseph Richardson; two brothers, Joseph (Maria) Waselus and Victor (Elizabeth) Waselus; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
