Get fit and have fun this New Year

SOUTH BUFFALO - So the holidays are almost over and the parties, holiday food and extra cheer have left you with a sluggish demeanor and hostility towards your bathroom scale. Your resolutions in years past to get back in shape have resulted in two weeks of driving miles to get your new gym to experience hours of overexertion, followed by another two weeks of sore muscles and sprains. Within a month you were back to your old couch potato self. So, how do we avoid the gym burnout this year?

The secret; make the place convenient, the pace enjoyable and the experience pleasant. While this may sound simple, it will take some planning to make your workout ritual a feasible long term goal. Here are a few local options of fitness establishments that are just minutes away. A membership at one of these options will get you out of the car and onto a machine quickly:

Manager Joe Piecuch and his staff have a “Judgment Free Zone” philosophy, which means members can relax, get in shape and have fun without being subjected to the hard core attitude that exists in other gyms. Fitness Trainer Adrian Morales offers a number of training classes including individualized programs for your personalized needs and “30 Minute Circuit” classes, designed to get you in and out of the gym quickly. Planet Fitness is offering a beginning of the year special. Starting Jan 1 through Jan 10, $10 down and $10 per month, gets you all the benefits Planet Fitness has to offer for a regular membership, including free unlimited fitness training classes with no long term commitments.

Steel Mill Gym, Inc.: 1234 Abbott Rd, (822-4271): Open at 5am Mon through Fri as well as reasonable weekend hours, Steel Mill Gym is easily accessible and locally owned and operated. The Steel Mill Gym offers a one year membership for $299, with monthly prices available for those that are not yet ready to make that yearly commitment. Most insurance plans that provide for a gym membership are accepted. Steel Mill Gym offers affordable personal training and a full line of nutritional supplements. Their services include Olympic lifting, powerlifting and body building, as well as weight loss and weight gain services.

Catalyst Express: 2745 Seneca Street, Buffalo [824-4655] (Previously Southtowns Fitness Center): offering cardio circuit and Zumba classes and featuring “Will, Power & Grace” classes, a 60 minute barefoot cardio & flex strength training workout, this conveniently located gym also offers a “Kid’s Club” available to its Green Membership members, and a shake bar for your post workout nutrition.

Once you have the selected a gym that meets your needs, consider your lifestyle. Can you really go to the gym three times a week for two hours without interfering with your other responsibilities and without your gym schedule becoming monotonous? This is not an option for most people. Making your goals reasonable will make fitness success more attainable. Start by placing one or two workouts into each week, and make it a habit to complete them. In addition, pack a bag with everything you will need for the gym including your favorite music and keep it handy (near the door, in your car or other such place) so that when the mood strikes you outside of your normal routine schedule you have the flexibility to roll with it and treat yourself to a workout. The more sensible the workout schedule and the more flexible and forgiving you are with adapting the schedule week to week, the more likely you will be to looking forward to the experience and finding it enjoyable rather than tedious. Bear in mind, conditioning of your body is a marathon not a sprint. No great thing was ever created suddenly.
