Depew gets ready to Rock the Village

DEPEW - The Village of Depew will play host to the second installment of Rock the Village, a free concert series that takes place in Lancaster and Depew each summer. The concerts are sponsored by the Lancaster-Depew Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and are meant to encourage healthy and safe environments.

“Our coalition sponsored this to promote drug and alcohol free events in the area,” said Lisa Johnson, coordinator for the coalition.

The coalition’s goal is to prevent youth substance abuse by working with the community, emphasizing positive opportunities, and assessing factors that may increase substance abuse.

Since 2010, the coalition has put on two free shows every summer. Johnson said the Depew community was added to the venue last year.

“We like having one concert in Lancaster and one in Depew,” Johnson said. “That way if someone can’t make it to one show, there’s always a second chance to catch it.”

The idea for the event was inspired by the local high schools’ Battle of the Bands competition.

“Originally we wanted to offer it as a prize for the winner of one of the schools’ Battle of the Bands to headline their own show during the summer,” Johnson said. “That didn’t really work out, but we put the word out on Facebook that we were looking for bands. The kids saw it on there and volunteered to help out.”

This year local bands Fighting Francis, Stasiapalooza, and Figurehead will be performing.

“The bands we’re using are actually all sort of teenage bands that have their own garage-style bands,” Johnson said.

Admission to the show is free, and refreshments will be on sale. Johnson said she is expecting about 120 people to come out for the show.

“It’s pretty much the same turnout we had last year, about 125 people per concert,” Johnson said. “The turnout for Lancaster this year was really good, so we expect the same for Depew.”

Depew’s Rock the Village will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Firemen’s Park on the corner of Terrace Blvd. and Erie St., Depew. In case of rain, the date for this event will be moved to Tuesday, Aug. 21.

“I have to say the Village of Depew and the Village of Lancaster have been so supportive with offering space for us to be able to hold this event,” Johnson said. “We just hope for good weather and that a lot of people turn out.”
