Jacobs to sponsor community blood drive at Erie County Auto Bureau

BY: Press Release | April 30, 2013

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs will be hosting an open-to-the-public blood drive with Unyts, WNY’s only organ, eye, tissue and community blood center, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Erie County Auto Bureau, 2122 George Urban Blvd., Cheektowaga.

“Giving the gift of life through a blood donation is critically important,” Jacobs said. “By giving blood, you are helping to make sure there is blood available for your friends and neighbors in their time of need. I would also like to encourage the community to enroll on the New York State Registry as an organ and tissue donor and help the more than 117,000 currently waiting for a transplant.”

Since beginning collections in June 2007, Unyts has already become the primary supplier of blood products for the six hospitals in Niagara and Wyoming Counties, ECMC and Kaleida Health. Our local hospitals need to maintain an adequate supply of blood for emergency situations and it is up to Unyts’ Community Blood Service and the generosity of our donors to help provide safe levels of blood inventory.

By giving blood with Unyts you are making sure your family, friends, neighbors and other members of the community have blood available when they need it. To schedule an appointment to donate blood please call 512-7940. Walk-ins always welcome! The community can also enroll as an organ and tissue donor on the New York State Donor Registry at any of the Erie County Auto Bureaus.

Headquartered in Buffalo and established in 1981, Unyts is among the leading procurement organizations in the United States, and is the only organization of its kind nationwide to offer opportunities for organ, eye, tissue and blood donation. Unyts operates as a not-for-profit serving the eight counties of Western New York and is part of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
