Barker Free Library offers free music service

When Library Director Lisa Thompson looked at the number of users from the Barker Free Library that are accessing free music downloads from Freegal Music, she was astounded.

“Our patrons are using the free music download service at numbers similar to larger libraries in our area,” said Thompson. “We have been telling everyone about it, and it looks like we have helped quite a few folks get their favorite songs.”

Freegal is a free music download service that provides access to millions of songs from more than 10,000 labels including the Sony Music catalog. Users can sign into the service using their library card from their library in the NIOGA Library System.

“We have the link to our Freegal log in page right on the homepage of our website at www.barkerfreelibrary.com, but you can also find it at the bottom of the NIOGA Library Services’ homepage at www.nioga.org,” said Thompson.

When signed in using your library card number and your PIN number, patrons can download up to three free songs each week, giving them access to 156 free songs to keep and enjoy on their electronic devices each year. The service keeps track of your downloads and every song has a sample clip so you can listen to the song before you download it.

“Songs from Freegal are in MP3 format which means that they will work on any MP3 player or iPod and they can be loaded into iTunes. They work on both PCs and Mac computers as well as on apps for Smart Phones,” according to Thompson.

She also notes that the Barker Free Library has complimentary bookmarks that provide the URL for patrons to find Freegal at the library circulation desk.

“It’s a nice reminder to have this close at hand, and we have been passing out our bookmarks as patrons check out,” she said. “We would love more of our patrons to take advantage of this fantastic service.”

For more details about the Freegal Music or to get help getting your PIN number, stop by the library at 8706 Main St. in Barker or call 795-3344.
