LOCKPORT - The new location for the Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride opened at 5 Gooding St. on May 4. The building is now in the tour path, an oval loop, allowing for a smoother journey rather than the old location, which was “off the beaten path a bit.”
The Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride tour is a 70-minute history lesson incorporated with fun and includes a 15-minute boat ride. Their summer hours run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., tours running on the hour everyday despite any weather condition.
“It’s quite overwhelming,” Owner Tom Callahan said about the public’s response to the new location. “There is never a day where somebody doesn’t stop and say ‘wow.’”
Callahan’s business partner Clancy Burkwit helped in the building plans of the new building, which allows for more visibility than the old location. The facility took only 60 days to be built and up and running.
Callahan and Burkwit are incorporating historical objects from their own collection slowly as the new location thrives. Currently, the Holly Manufacturers Company bell, which was manufactured in 1879 on the grounds, hangs above the building.
In addition to the new location, two new tours will also be introduced: the Ghost Hunters experience and the Flight of Five tour.
The Flight of Five tour, which is incorporated into the regular tours, will be a more in-depth tour on the history of the Flight of Five and the reestablishing and preserving of the Flight of Five.
The tour will be set up in addition to the regular tour creating an emphasis on the Flight of Five.
“(We feel) it’s going to be explosive at the end of the day,” Burkwit said.
The Ghost Hunter’s experience will open July 27 and tickets will be sold as groups only — a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20. The tour will take people underground at night for four hours with no lights.
“We are going to try and capitalize on the actual nature of what the Ghost Hunters is and what the experience was during the show,” said owner Tom Callahan. “(This tour) will be a lifetime experience.”
