KENMORE - While many people wait until the New Year to kick start their fitness goals, Vice President of Personal Training with Best Fitness, Karli Taylor said that is the wrong idea and not to skip out during the holiday season.

According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, in America people tend to gain around one to two pounds from Thanksgiving to New Years.

While this doesn’t seem like a big deal the study showed that people tend to never lose that extra weight, so over the years it adds up.

“We don’t expect people to lose weight over the holiday season it would be unrealistic and unfair to set weight loss goals,” said Taylor. “So we are setting weight maintenance goals for all of our members and clients and challenge them to not gain any weight this holiday season.”

On their Facebook, website and in the clubs they will be sharing daily tips to help individuals keep the pounds off during the holiday season. Some of these might include, eating a small snack before attending a holiday party so you don’t binge on junk food, and eating things at the parties you can’t have all year long like cookies and eggnog, instead of pretzels and potato chips.

“Everything in moderation is fine, don’t be so hard on yourself and deprive yourself because you probably will end up going crazy and losing it before the end of the season,” said Taylor. “If you do have a day where you do indulge a little too much don’t take that as your cue to quit until the New Year.”

She said a lot of people have one bad day and quit, but when you do this you are just adding to the weight you will have to lose to reach your goal, instead of if you had maintained your original weight through the season.

When it comes to exercising she said it’s understandable that people have less time during the holidays to work out. Instead of the normal hour someone might spend at the gym doing three or four 15 minute bouts, throughout the day, can be just as effective. Try parking further away at work, taking a walk during your break, parking at the opposite end of the mall when you are shopping and taking the stairs.

“We want to encourage the community to challenge themselves not to put on any extra pounds during the holiday season. It does not mean giving up all delicious food, it just means being mindful of what we do put in our bodies. Today, more than ever before, there are healthy alternatives and fitness opportunities,” said Taylor.
