Clarence author Alycia Ripley has been quite busy. After traveling the country and visiting her dream destination throughout her tour for her most recently released book, she’s almost ready to release the second part of her three part series.
“The Final Alice,” was released in the winter of 2011. This book was Ripley’s way of writing a good versus evil story and she refers to it as her “savior story.”
“It’s about someone who, without fully knowing what will happen, takes on this destiny and says yes. The books, to me, are about saying yes to doing this huge thing, regardless of the sacrifices that are going to happen,” she said.
Ripley recently finished her book tour for “The Final Alice” and was thrilled with the different places that she had the opportunity to visit. She had several book signings in different cities throughout the country but the trip that made her most excited was Australia.
Ripley’s intern lives in Sydney, Australia and encouraged her to come visit, explaining that she had several fans from the area. Without hesitation, she booked a two-month trip to Sydney, a place she had always dreamt of visiting.
“I had always wanted to go. I think it’s so amazing and I just wanted to go,” she said. “It was just so awesome to go there. Every single day we were doing something.”
Ripley visited the University of Sydney along with several local bookstores and did private talks. When she left Australia, she also left behind a few first-edition copies of “The Final Alice” for her intern to sell, which sold quite quickly.
“People go crazy for first editions. People want things that are collectible,” she said.
She explained that first editions are the first group of copies to be published. They often have typos and errors in the book that are eventually fixed before the next group of books are printed. This makes the first editions of books very popular and worth much more money than the book is sold for.
Ripley’s second book of the series, “Alice’s Army,” is almost ready and will be released this summer. The artwork for the cover is in the works and will tie in with the cover of the first book of the series.
“Alice’s Army” is about Alice and her team going to Africa to track down and hunt a serial killer. This book, unlike the first, is about the entire group and is not just from Alice’s perspective.
“I think [readers] will be excited because I think it does what a sequel, in my mind, should do,” said Ripley.
Once the second book is released, Ripley will begin working on the third and final book to the series. Surprisingly, she already has the ending written, which was actually the first part she wrote to begin the series.
Ripley will begin the tour for her second book in Buffalo, as she does with all of her books. She said it’s a way of letting her community see that, with hard work, you can make it.
“I feel that people of all ages here, need to know that people from Buffalo have made it in whatever their chosen field is,” she said. “When I grew up, I really would’ve loved if more people from Buffalo, who did make it, be them writers, actors or whatever, I wish they would’ve come back and talked.”
Ripley currently resides and Clarence and loves it. She said that she does most of her thinking for her books while riding her bike through Spaulding Lake.
