SARDINIA — A public hearing will be held in Sardinia, regarding stray and feral cats, which one town individual said is an ongoing problem.

During the Sardinia Town Board meeting held Jan. 10, local resident Dawn Place requested permission to establish a non-profit organization, A Place for Cats, on her property, located near Route 16 and Dutchtown Road.

Her proposal included plans for a new building on her property, to house these animals.

Town Clerk Betsy Marsh said the rural community of Sardinia has always had concerns about stray and feral cats, a common issue in other, similar communities.

“Mostly around barns,” Marsh said, regarding the locations of many of the animals. Cats that have not been spayed or neutered, or those who may have rabies, are of concern to residents, because of nuisance problems and citizens’ health and safety.

The town’s planning board approved the request and a public hearing will be held about the matter at 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 14.

In other board news:
– A public hearing will also be held on Feb. 14 for a proposal from Waste Management to use property between an old and new landfill for addition fill space.

– Town Supervisor Mary Hannon reported that the town is waiting to be contacted by the Sardinia/Chaffee Volunteer Fire Department, concerning its operating contract with the town. As a result, the board tabled a request from the department to use a local park for its annual July carnival.

– The town continues to research the cost associated with a new roof for the highway barn. Board members said they plan to request information from an engineer for a definite cost.

The next Sardinia Town Board meeting will be held at 6:30 on Feb. 14 at the community center, located at 12320 Savage Road.
