Iroquois High School students are tech-savy

ELMA - The Iroquois High School students currently enrolled in the Sports in Literature course have the opportunity to use the Barnes and Noble Nook “Simple Touch” ebook reader this school year.
This electronic reader pilot program enables the students to enhance their reading experience by looking up unknown words, taking notes within the text, and personalizing their screen by adjusting the font type and size.
Since all of the texts for the course are stored on the Nook, with a possible expansion of up to 1,000 titles, the students carry one device instead of a multitude of texts – a benefit the students appreciate.
As all of the titles read in the course are non-fiction to support the new common core standards and to pique the students’ interest, these non-fiction titles are usually costly for a district; however, because the Barnes and Noble ebooks are significantly cheaper than their print counterparts and the district can share one ebook title with six devices, ebooks quickly became cost effective.
Teachers can also take advantage of Barnes and Noble’s free Friday program to download available ebooks at no cost, as well as any titles which are declared part of the free and public domain.
One of the high school English department teachers, Sara Bennett, presented the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the Nooks at the October High School Student Parent Association (IHSPA) meeting.
The high school library, the first to use and have success with the Nooks, shared the same positive student comments:
“The Nook has made class easier for me in many ways. With adjustable font size and the compact size of the Nook, it helps me to enjoy reading. With having a Nook, it is easier to take around instead of multiple books. I feel that the school is taking a step in the right direction by incorporating more technology to a student’s school life,” she said.
Since students in the English department already excel as shown on their past Regents exam scores, using the Nooks will continue to benefit our tech-savvy learners.
