The Town of Hamburg Police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating a two car accident which took place about 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday Sept. 11, on Southwestern Boulevard near Lake View Road.

According to police, a vehicle operated by Kevin Demert Jr., 21, of Farnham, crossed the center line of the roadway and struck a second vehicle operated by Ashley Derenda, 18, of Orchard Park.

A passenger in the Derenda vehicle, Caleb Bantin-Barney, 19, was also injured in the crash.

Both operators were transported to the Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight. Bantin-Barney was transported by Rural Metro Ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center.

Both Derenda and  Bantin-Barney are listed in critical condition. Demert is listed in fair condition at ECMC.

The accident is still under investigation, Town of Hamburg Police Captain Kevin Trask said. According to police, speed and an unsafe lane change by the Demert vehicle appear to be contributing factors in the accident.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, but at this point, it appears that impairment is not a contributing factor, police said.
